You log into UCAS or open that envelope, and the grades aren’t quite what you expected. It’s a gut-punch moment, but it doesn’t have to mean the end of your university ambitions. Every year, thousands of students secure places at top universities through UCAS Clearing – including at the University of Nottingham.
Nottingham is one of the UK’s leading universities and one of the most student-friendly cities you’ll ever live in. While it’s competitive – with an estimated 11% overall acceptance rate – plenty of students still secure a place through Clearing. In fact, some courses have much more flexibility than you might expect, especially if spaces open up after Results Day.

Clearing is UCAS’s way of connecting students without confirmed places to universities with course vacancies. It runs from early July until mid-September, but for most students, the key date is A Level Results Day. That’s when the biggest flurry of Clearing activity happens.
For Nottingham, Clearing applications open at 8 am on 14 August 2025. You’ll need your UCAS number, your exam results, and ideally a shortlist of courses you’d like to apply for.
