Discover: West End Lights – Lincoln’s Sparkling Winter Tradition in the West End

Every December, Lincoln’s historic West End transforms into a magical wonderland for one unforgettable evening. From 6 pm to 9 pm (e.g. Friday, 5th December 2025), local residents — illuminators — light up their homes and streets with creative displays like film projections, lanterns, shadow puppets, and light sculptures  .

What started in 2010 as a few glowing windows has grown into a beloved community festival featuring over 60 illuminations across the west end of Lincoln.

Why Students Should Be Part of the Magic

    • Top-tier photo ops and festive inspiration

    • A chance to meet neighbours and feel part of the West End community

    • Perfect for creative projects, social media content, or simply spreading cheer

🎓 Student Tips: How to Join In

    1. Sign Up as an Illuminator

Want to contribute your own display—even a simple window decoration or paper lantern? Fill out the Illuminators form on the West End Lights website to have your display featured on the official map and be discovered by visitors  .

    2. Join the Mailing List

Stay updated about planning, tips, and community collaboration by subscribing via their site. If you’ve signed up before, you’ll automatically receive updates for the next festival  .

    3. Creative Ideas to Participate

    • Convert a window into a mini home cinema, screening short videos or animations.

    • Design and display shadow puppets or lanterns.

    • Engage in the newer element of the event—charitable contributions: offering free hot drinks, festive treats, or handmade crafts to visitors, all listed on the event map  .

    4. Walk the Walk

On the night of the event, grab a few friends and explore the West End. Use the interactive map to navigate between displays and enjoy a leisurely stroll filled with light and creativity.

    Student Spotlight: Real-Life Experiences

A University of Lincoln student shared how participating in community projects like West End Lights helped build connections and creativity:

“Being a student who had only lived in Lincoln for a year, I hadn’t got involved in events like the West End Lights… Hearing how people respond to the videos is super exciting…”

This event truly embodies the inclusive spirit of Lincoln’s West End, where students and residents collaborate in crafting something beautiful together.

✅ Join in — How to Get Started:

    1. Visit the West End Lights official website and go to the “Illuminators” section to sign up and fill in the form.

    2. Join the mailing list at the bottom of the illuminators page to get event updates and inspiration  .
